Educational

NounSense is a fun social game that motivates children to read. Teachers love its flexibility – it can be played with 1-6 players, with or without the playing board. A game lasts about 30 minutes, portions of a game as little as 10 minutes. While they’re having fun, students practice their skills in reading, word recognition, grammar and sentence structure. NounSense is a perfect example of how to learn and have fun at the same time!

NounSense in the classroom and beyond . . .

A. Pre-School/Remedial tutoring

Although NounSense is designed mainly for ages 7-9, non-readers have fun by playing with a reading buddy. And children ages 10+ can get remedial reading practice since the humour is designed for all ages!

B. Phonological Awareness

Using the 10 stories and 72 Silly Nouns, NounSense offers many opportunities for exercises in sound exploration, rhyming and syllable and sentence structure.

For example: Find words that start with the “gr” sound

For example: Pick up 3 Silly Nouns:
– 1 with one syllable
- 1 with two syllables
- 1 with three syllables

C. Learning Disabilities

NounSense and the NounSense Activity Guide are filled with opportunities and exercises for developing skills in word recognition, reading rate, comprehension, spelling, sequencing and oral reading with expression.

D. Social Skills

NounSense provides social interaction at its best because the players laugh and have fun while moving around the board, choosing Silly Nouns, trading Wild Words and reading their finished stories out loud.

E. English as a Second Language

NounSense is perfect for children and adults learning a second language. It develops vocabulary and word recognition skills and promotes reading and oral expression. And because it’s a word substitution game, students can frequently alter the meaning of the sentences to experiment with structure and humour.

F. Counselling

NounSense is ideal for Counsellors and Social workers to help improve communication. A game of NounSense can provide fun and laughter to promote a non-threatening atmosphere.
